| Railfan & Railroad Magazine
I was approached by the editor of Railfan & Railroad Magazine about a year and a half ago about updating the look of their magazine targeted to railroad enthusiasts and photographers. Launched in 1974 as simply "Railfan," the "Railroad" title was folded in by 1979.
I was looking to create a new balance that gives equal weight to both "railfan" and "railroad." The serif-based ampersand placed at an angle helps tie the two elements together. The bold letterforms stand out against any background, and are visible at a distance. These qualities all help draw attention to the product, especially when you're competing for traffic on the crowded newsstands!
